Why We Started Sawdust & Ponytails (And Who It's Really For)

For the woman who's been underestimated in a hardware store. You know who you are.


There's a moment a lot of women woodworkers know well.

You walk into a hardware store, you're there for a specific thing — maybe a router bit, maybe a set of chisels — and someone asks if you need help finding the home décor section.

Or you mention your hobby at a party and someone says, "Oh, like, birdhouses?"

Or you search for woodworking apparel and everything that comes back has a cartoon guy in a hard hat.

That’s the gap Sawdust & Ponytails was built to fill.


The Problem Was the Whole Vibe

When we looked at the woodworking space, the skill was everywhere. Women building furniture, making cabinets, running their own shops, doing finish work that looked like art. The talent wasn't the issue.

The issue was that the culture — the merch, the language, the branding — acted like these women didn't exist.

The shirts were boxy and brown. The slogans were either too precious ("I'm a crafty girl!") or too borrowed from the guys' side (skulls and saws). Nothing felt like it was made by someone who actually knew what it felt like to pull a clean dovetail joint or explain to someone that yes, you do know how to use a table saw.

We wanted something that felt earned. Not loud. Not cute. Just… right.


So We Built What We Couldn't Find

Sawdust & Ponytails started with a simple premise: make apparel for women who build things, designed by people who actually understand the culture.

That means the typography is deliberate. The phrases aren't pandering. The humor is dry, not desperate. And the fit actually works for someone who wears it to the workshop, not just a photoshoot.

The brand voice is cheeky without being crude. Direct without being harsh. Confident without needing to explain itself.

Because that's exactly what women woodworkers are.

“Woodworking Because Murder Is Wrong.” That’s not a novelty shirt. That’s a whole personality.


Who Sawdust & Ponytails Is Really For

She's 25 to 55. She's in the U.S. or Canada. She has a shop, or she's building one. She makes things with her hands and she doesn't apologize for the sawdust on her boots.

She's tired of being an afterthought in a space where she's increasingly the point.

She wants to wear something to the lumber yard that says she belongs there — not because she needs the validation, but because it's true and she might as well dress the part.

She's also, frankly, a little funny. She doesn't take herself too seriously, even though she takes her craft seriously. She measures twice. She cusses once.

She's who every single design here is made for.


The Mission, Plainly Stated

We exist to give female makers permission to stop overthinking, start building, and own their space in the workshop.

Through sassy, skill-forward apparel, we celebrate the women who build, fix, and make it work — one project and occasional swear word at a time.

That's it. No fluff. No mission-statement wordsmithing. Just a brand that finally gets it.
