Real Women Share Their First Project

inspiration community first woodworking project

Every skilled maker started with one nervous cut. We asked women in the Sawdust & Ponytails community to share the project that started it all — the wins, the mistakes, and what they'd tell themselves now.

Rebekah M. · Nashville, TN

A floating shelf I measured twice and cut wrong anyway.

"I watched about fourteen YouTube videos before I touched a single board. Then I measured wrong anyway and had to recut it. The shelf is slightly shorter than planned. It's been on my wall for three years and I look at it every single day."

What she learned: Imperfect and installed beats perfect and unstarted.

Danielle C. · Portland, OR

A garden bed that turned into a whole backyard.

"My first project was a raised garden bed — basic box, cedar boards, no fancy joinery. But something clicked when I held that drill and saw the corners come together. I've since built a pergola, a potting bench, and a fence. It started with tomatoes."

What she learned: One project is never just one project.

Tori A. · Columbus, OH

A dining table that the internet told me was too advanced.

"Every forum I visited said 'don't start with a table.' I started with a table. It wobbles a little on uneven floors. My family eats dinner at it every night. I don't regret it for one second."

What she learned: The rules about what beginners should build are mostly wrong.

Marissa L. · Austin, TX

A kids' step stool that made her daughter cry (happy tears).

"I made a little stool for my daughter so she could reach the bathroom sink. When I handed it to her, she said 'Mama made this?' I've been making things ever since. That reaction is the whole reason."

What she learned: The people you build for make it matter.
